Fawlty Towers: Beating the Car interview - Fawlty Towers - BBC Basil Fawlty beating the car is one of the most memorable scenes from the BBC classic Fawlty Towers. Here John Cleese talks about the technical difficulty of producing such a fantastic comedy moment; it's all about the bendiness of the branch, apparently! The beating of the Austin is a memorable scene, and wont be the last time somebody does that to a car in Torquay!
Who can forget Waldorf salad and the Germans sketches! Favourite quote is 'Why is everything bottom to you Americans?'
Shame they only ever made 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers but then quality not quantity, this should be noted with other TV series!

Hey aint that the truth....look what happened to twin peaks, the first series of 12 episodes was great, the next year when they stretched it out to 24 episodes it killed it. You will notice all the really good new series only have 12-13 episodes a season now. Faulty Towers was brilliant, still is all these years later. Although Bottom ran for 3 series and didn't lose it's appeal, but then it was filed with toilet humour which is easier to keep going I guess.

Trouble is the scripwriters and producers are under pressure from the TV stations to produce so many series and then often they simply run out of ideas. John Cleese and Connie Booth made it clear from the strat to the Beeb that it would be a one off and resisted the temptation to do further series even spin offs. I reckon a good exception are the writers David Croft and Jimmy Perry, tons of episodes in 'Dads army' and 'Are you being served' and 'it aint half hot mum', without compromise, if thats your bag.
