I think to create so many turned blocks they did the following. Create a turned pillar in wood, building it up gradually, especially those with square or rectangular strips on their sides. Make a mould of it. Pound up stone and make a cement/concrete from it. Pour the mould. When it is set a few days, turn any extra parts or polish them while the cast pillar is still hardening. The skill goes into creating the mould you want to pour. Such casting pieces for moulds can be made of wood elsewhere and transported to be cast. Other temple parts can also be done in the same way and added to the temples. As this casting technology was lost, newer pillars were chiselled by hand and the result is mainly square pillars.

Why were there so many columns sitting around? Probably because of some error in the casting. Too much of a problem getting rid of them. Some may have been used as fillers in some cheaper made temples due to the casting errors.

After further thought, I believe this is where the wooden moulds were created. Sample cast pillars were there to show the result of casting certain moulds. They were turned here, then sent to the temple site where multiple pillars could be cast from the same mould without the effort of moving large stone cast pillars long distances. More than likely they made castings to do the more intricate carved panels. They were carved in wood, a mould was made of the carved wood panel then the resulting cast was either done in-situ or lifted into place. In fact, the whole temple could be assembled with wood/ clay pieces ready for casting to see how it would look. Then it could be taken apart and each piece cast on site. The pillars required a lathe and had to be turned elsewhere before transporting to site.
