Our understanding of genes and what each tiny part does is going a long way to building the encyclopaedia of gene understanding. We have already created the dictionary of genes and are able to look at any living life form and very quickly add its genes to the dictionary of life. We are still a long way from understanding how those genes are expressed or should I say what they do and how they interact.
There is a new technique called CRISPR (link below) which allows the easy and accurate insertion or removal of specific gene sequences. The implication of the discovery of this tool is immense.
If the remodelling of our genes becomes just a matter of choice and an injection, for you or your unborn child! Just like you elect to have cosmetic surgery or dental treatment. Would you do it? And if so what would you change about yourself? Or more to the point what would you select to give/help your unborn child in the life he or she will be born into? There is no doubt in my mind in due course the CRISPR process will become a major business model for commercial companies to exploit. Just like breast implants. In fact! The breast implant business like all other cosmetics, dental and commercial medical treatments that people elect to have. Will go out of business almost overnight. Imagine you have a choice of hundreds, if not thousands of changes you could pick from a catalogue, or an app on your phone, in as yet an unconceived baby What would you pick? The obvious choices would from a basic list like. Very bright to genius, Athletic, musical, artist, creative in any way you want, body type and size, the colour of skin and so on. But just keep in mind once that encyclopaedia is completed your choices will include everything that you see in nature! For instance, regenerating limbs if they are lost, changing your skin colour at will, just like a chameleon or squid. Introduce photosynthesis as a means of feeding yourself? The list goes on and on.
