If the solar system coalesced from a cloud of hydrogen gas forming the sun and the planets! Why hasn't the asteroid belt formed into a planet or planets? Or for that matter why hasn't the rings of Saturn which is made up of small particles formed into a planet? If gravity, we are told caused hydrogen gas to form the sun and planets, surely the rings of Saturn which has bigger particles would have come together because of gravity and form moons or planets? Of course, I haven't got around to Saturns rings yet!

I think that the asteroid belt formed from a planet.

I think that the asteroid belt formed from a planet. You may well be right! But The size of the rocks should facilitate an even faster recombination because the gravity acting on the stream of debris would bring them together much faster.

There is lot of Space between the Asteroids, not like how Star Wars shows it. CollisionsThe high population of the asteroid belt makes for a very active environment, where collisions between asteroids occur frequently (on astronomical time scales). Collisions between main-belt bodies with a mean radius of 10 km are expected to occur about once every 10 million years. A collision may fragment an asteroid into numerous smaller pieces (leading to the formation of a new asteroid family). Conversely, collisions that occur at low relative speeds may also join two asteroids. After more than 4 billion years of such processes, the members of the asteroid belt now bear little resemblance to the original population. link

I thought this was an interesting question (that I had never even considered) so I googled it: Sounds reasonable enough. Another source says:

That may all be true! But stand back outside the box for a moment. If planets and the Sun can form from a cloud of hydrogen with a relatively tiny amount of gravitational force acting on it! Then my question needs to be thought of in that comparison? Why hasn't the asteroid belt formed into a planet or small Moon? As already stated there are very large lumps of rock/ice 950 km in the circle and very small particles that are the asteroid belt. Using the argument that Jupiter is responsible for stopping the asteroid belt forming into a planet/moon must be wrong! When you consider that three of Jupiter's moons are smaller than the larger masses in the asteroid belt. (how did the larger masses form in that case?) Just a thought! TBC

Ancient scriptures describe other planetary bodies in the solar system Tiamat for one and Phaeton for another that were destroyed to become the asteroid belt, so it would seem that you might be looking at this from an incorrect perspective , many things that we have been programmed to accept as fact are simply control methods to enable societies to function adequately and to dissuade the sheep from asking too many embarrassing questions that the powers to be do not wish you to be empowered with.
It is thought that Mars was once a moon of one of the destroyed planets - and that Ceres is a large remnant and might contain what is left of the oceans of Tiamat and also complex life...... this is why there is so much interest in it.
