So, I've just been reading dirctive 2008/101/EC. ec.europa.eu/environment/climat/aviation/index_en.htmSeems. That the airline industry is fined if they excede 97% of emissions based on 2008 levels. However, by EU estimates, they would excede these emmisions every year (based on airline growth), thus giving the EC a virtually unlimited fund from the airline industry. Now. Bring on a recession, increased fuel costs, etc. Then, a volcano. Grounding european flights for a week and on going. There are rumors that airlines will seek compensation from the EC to pay for losses due to another law the EC has (pay compensation to passengers for delay). Now. Is it a question of Peter paying Paul? Meaning. How much have airlines paid to the EC and how much wil they be refunded? Are these groundings just a con? Like a big buisness insurance fraud? Like GM paying back money with government money, except the other way around? Who wins? I know who loses. The person who buys a plane ticket. I dunno. Just a thought.
