The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment on Black Men The Guatemalan Syphilis experiment is no the first time the United States government has performed sick experiments on human beings and apologized for it. In 1932 the Tuskegee Institute took 400 black men infected with syphilis and 200 black men without syphilis. The black men were poor sharecroppers and did not have money for medical care. The institute set up a clinic in which they told the men that they would receive treatment for the syphilis. Instead of receiving treatment for the syphilis the men were just given aspirin pills; they were also subjected to spinal taps. The experiment lasted 40 years, from 1932-1972. Even when penicillin was found to be a sufficient treatment in 1948 for syphilis, the men were not treated. The men would undergo the more gruesome stages of syphilis, in which open lesions appear and neurological damage sets in. Many of the men died of syphilis and their wives were infected since the men did not receive any treatment. Medical historian and researcher Harriet Washington wrote a book called, Medical Apartheid, on this subject. What follows is an interview with Harriet Washington on the topic of the Tuskegee experiments.
