I'd say give up.
You would be limiting yourself to too few things.
Try dim-sum or tapas.

yeah seems like a stupid idea on further reflection.
i've never had it. me and the wife are going to a japanese steakhouse and hit up their sushi bar. that way if we don't like it we can move to the hibachi.

aaa-now, Looky-here. I'm a redneck and love sushi!!!!! My wife got me turned onto it. Start slow... California Roll (Imitation Crab or steamed crab, avacado, cucumber, seaweed wrap and rice - dash of sesame) that will get you aclimated to the texture - which is addicting in itself. The try BBQ Eel Nigari. It is a bit chewy, but it has been cooked so much that it is crumbly too, and the sweet BBQ sauce is awesome. It's a 1 LARGE bite piece. Just throw it in and chew it (SILENCE DARRYL!!!) California Roll - 8 pieces... Eel Nigari... Also - the flying fish eggs are awesome - they really have no taste but add to the texture. They are orange. I am a HUGE Tuna fan - don't do salmon much, salmon is my wife's favorite. But try a Spicy Tuna Tataki. They take a beautiful brick of tuna and seer it, inside is still raw, mix it with salad and onions and drizzle ponzu sauce on it, which is a citrus based soy sauce - very tangy, make your forehead sweat, then they put spicy mayo on it - which is just mayo mixed with Texas Pete.... It took me one time to become addicted - it is now where I like to eat most. This is the place in Greenville... I'll never willingly eat at the hibachi again - because when it is all said and done, a Japanese Steak House is a glorified Waffle House. So how did your sushi experience go?
