Apparently Skate is similar to a females ..... Navy boys call women skate bait from my understanding. "Skate Bait" is the derogatory phrase used in Portsmouth but also in most other Naval cities to describe the type of girl who chases after sailors fresh back onto dry land. It used to be a tradition that prostitutes were bused down from London whenever a large contingent of the Navy were coming into port and the Guildhall Square made an excellent perusing ground for the men who had been out at see for month's if not year's at a time. ![](http://www.orioncharters.com/skate97a.jpg) Sorry don't see any resemblance myself.

Portsmouth is a Naval town and sailors were known as Skates ...............not the woman! Royal Navy sailors who were at sea for months on end would often use skate fish to relieve their sexual frustrations (the mouth of the skate is said to be even better than warm liver). According to local myth, Portsmouth women would fend off the advances of sailors with the phrase 'I ain't no skate-bait, mate.' Source(s): www.guardian.co.uk/football/2005/…
