THE desperately disappointing Wallabies were Paddy-whacked 15-6 by Ireland at their Eden Park graveyard and dumped into a nightmare World Cup draw that now makes the final a distant dream.
The game day injury withdrawals of essential flanker David Pocock and scrum leader Stephen Moore tore a major hole in the Wallabies firepower but nothing could be taken away from the passionate Irish pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the tournament's history.

The ramifications are huge because it now pitches the Wallabies into the horror scenario of having to win a mini-Tri-Nations just to make the final on October 23.

They have now been spun into a likely quarter-final meeting against South Africa - impressive 49-3 winners over Fiji earlier in the day - and the semi-final roadblock of meeting the All Blacks on October 16 at this same killing field in Auckland.

Wallaby sides have now lost 13 times at Eden Park since their last success there in 1986.

Black or green jerseys against them, it doesn't seem to matter.

They were dominated tactically and physically and that, more than anything, is the warning sign that this Wallaby side is built up to be more than it is.

Irish skipper Brian O'Driscoll had put 'now or never' status on the contest in the build-up and his men tore into the Wallabies in just that style for their most famous World Cup victory.

"I swear we were playing in Dublin with that crowd and we had to give them something to shout about," enthused O'Driscoll as the stands heaved with Irish cheer in the throng of 58,668.

Wallabies skipper James Horwill was desolate: "No momentum. Outplayed and some dumb footy."

THE All Blacks scored five tries for a convincing bonus point 37-17 victory over World Cup nemesis France to give their skipper Richie McCaw a winning 100th Test.
New Zealand gave the full house 60,800 Eden Park crowd what they wanted with a dominant display to justify their tournament favouritism and take charge with a five-point lead in Pool A with one game left in the group stage.

The All Blacks controlled all but the opening 10 minutes to part exorcise the demons of their stunning quarter-final exit to the French at the 2007 World Cup.

New Zealand, champing to deliver a Webb Ellis Cup to their rugby-obsessed homeland after 24 years of failure, made a powerful statement that they are the team to beat.

It was also a fitting reward for McCaw, the All Black described by coach Graham Henry as "an inspiration to New Zealanders."

The warrior openside flanker became the first All Black to play a century of Tests for his country.

Fullback Israel Dagg, who kept 98-Test Mils Muliaina out of the New Zealand lineup, was named man-of-the-match with a try double.

"We realised we had to take a step this week against the French. Obviously from history we knew this would be a good team," McCaw said.

"We had to absorb a fair bit early on, but I was proud of the way the boys did that, and then when we get our opportunity we put points on the board. In big Test matches that's what you've got to do."

French skipper Thierry Dusautoir said that France could learn a lot from the defeat.

World Cup - England coaches suspended for ball switch ;D

England have handed a one-match ban to coaches David Alred and Paul Stridgeon for switching balls used in Saturday's World Cup win over Romania without permission.

The Rugby Football Union released a statement on Thursday saying that both would be banned from Eden Park for Saturday's final Pool B match against Scotland.

The statement explained that the pair "mistakenly thought that there was an issue with some of the match balls".

"The RFU fully accepts that the action of those team management members was incorrect and detrimental to the image of the tournament, the game and to English rugby."

Assistant coach Alred and fitness coach Stridgeon swapped balls that they thought unfit for use after conversions were kicked in the first half of the game England won 67-3 in Dunedin.

England were the subject of a misconduct investigation from Rugby World Cup Limited after they were spotted substituting balls before Jonny Wilkinson attempted "a number of conversion kicks".

Law 9.8.1 states the kicker must convert tries with same ball that was touched down, unless the referee agrees it is defective. England did not consult the match officials before making the switch.

Tournament officials investigated the breach but said no further action was necessary and deemed the RFU punishment "appropriate", but warned of severe action for any further breaches.

"It's unfortunate that we have had to take this action but ultimately there was a breach of the laws of the game," England manager Martin Johnson said in a statement on Thursday.

"But it's happened, some action has been taken and we have to move on."

Tonga pulled off one of the all-time Rugby World Cup upsets tonight, deservedly defeating France 19-14 at Wellington Regional Stadium.

It was a result no one could have predicted but its impact is lessened by the fact that it won't eliminate France from the tournament. Canada would have to beat the All Blacks, with a four-try bonus-point, in Wellington tomorrow for the French to fail to progress from Pool A.

That shouldn't diminish the extent of Tonga's achievement, though, in beating France for just the second time. The first being in Nuku'ulofa in 1999.

In terms of tonight, things didn't begin that auspiciously for Tonga, when not for the first time in this tournament, referee Steve Walsh awarded a penalty within a minute of the kickoff.

French halfback, Dimitri Yachvili duly kicked it to give his team an extremely early 3-0 lead.

At that point it was hard not yawn and think disconsolately about how many France would ultimately win by. All anyone ever wants to see is a game but everything about this one, including the start, led you suspect it would be a walkover.

Penalties were then exchanged, and leading 6-3, you expected France to kick further and further away. Only the next team to score were Tonga; not once, not twice, but three times.

Left wing Sukanaivalu Hufanga dived over for a try in the right-hand corner, following a robust run by halfback Taniela Moa and then a neat crosskick from first five-eighth Kurt Morath. Morath converted from the sideline and followed that up with a penalty five minutes out from halftime to hand Tonga a handy 13-6 lead at the break

The All Blacks first five-eighths has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament because of the groin injury he suffered at yesterday's captains run and Colin Slade will now be expected to wear the No 10 jersey
