ok so hawkin says we can theoretically travel forward in time but not backwards ..... so really what would be the point of time travelling ?cause you would have to travel backwards in time once you were in the future to get back to your original time line ....

thing is wiggy hawking isn't talking about the elusive time machine type travel. he is just rehashing einstein's thoughts on fast as light travel. most scientists agree that real time travel forwards and back is possible its the amount of energy and the need for a portable device to return you home that are the problems.
if you study hawking's body of work you'll find he is a brilliant mathematician but as a scientist he is a thief. he takes others work and makes it his own.

very good point concrete. unless their life span is extremely longer or unlimited then they may look at time in a whole different way than us. Yes Hawking is a thief but because of his condition he gets sympathy. One thing that hasn't been talked about in this thread is what about the possibility that some aliens experience time in a non linear fashion? It also raises a whole bunch of questions about the traveling close to the speed of light. Simply because in theory an organic being would be experiencing 1 day = 1 year at close to the speed of light. Does the organic body break down at higher speeds when used in direct correlation to the speed in which one travels? For example the closer to C ( being the constant speed of light) a person gets the faster they age. Or at those high of speeds does the brain begin to break down? What about the force load on the human body at those speeds? Since time exists and we know that gravity has a bearing on how time is perceived does that invalidate the theory of general relativity? How about invalidating the theory of special relativity? What kind of gravity would a person experience at 98% C? Would plants and foodstuffs break down at a quicker rate? What would happen if a crucial component of the ship broke down mid flight and there was no way to repair it? just a few questions that are swirling in my head right now.

all good questions wg. thing is if you are traveling at or faster than light speed you have worked out these problems.
according to the current theory you actually age less at light speed. which makes sense. time slows at that speed which is why you have the time difference between the travelers and those who are back on the home planet.

einstein once said "time is what the clock says "..... meaning time just a measurement ... so when we "measure" time .. there must be a baseline to start from ... a common timeline which works at slower speeds but once approaching the speed of light or even faster than ... this is impossible to combine using earth based time measurement ... the measurment becomes separate ...when travelling at the speed of light i dont think that we would really age less ... we would accoprding to earth time but that effect is due to the difference in time measurment because our environmental "time" while travelling is not the same as earth time ... there must be a way to measure time in a more universal way than to be based on earths revolution / orbit that only works if your on earth . follow?

That sounds like its from a physicists point of view any good biologist will tell you is that since humans are mammals(highly evolved mammals) we take a lot of subtle cues from our environment subtle things like changes in seasons, lunar and solar cycles, cloudy vs sunny days etc. These are more in the vein of what I am asking so i'll just tum it up in one simple question. Does the lack of changes in environment ( because there would only be artificial environment on board a ship) affect the body? If so how? ( ok so thats 2 questions) I understand your point wiggy
