Nothing to see here kids. Since pluto is theorized to have a high nitrogen content, the cause of the colouration is due to Pluto warming up. Not a huge deal mind you. But enough. I trust most of us here are bright enough to look up what I am about to explain.
As it warms up, nitrogen turns from solid to liquid to gas. Now, since it is getting closer to the sun, it is warming up. This will cause more nitrogen to be in what atmosphere it has (maybe even creating the atmosphere).
If we look at the spectal anaylis of nitrogen gas, you will note that it is quite red. I'm going form memory here, so bear with me. Because an exited nitrogen gas emits light at these colours. It means that the reflected light in the same wavelengths find it easier to pass through the gas. Now, Red, being the longest wavelength in the 'visible' spectrum, also has less chance of being blocked by particles between the observed object and the observer. That is why a sunset appears red. All the dust and vapour etc. Blocks out the smaller light wavelengths.
So, for all we know, Pluto could be turning any colour, but because of the distance and all the shit in the way, we see red.

but you forgot the most important part concrete............it isn't time for pluto to warm up. that's the mystery. most of us know about the gas makeup of the planet and its color when heated........this is more red than previous times.
you are wrong about the red. pluto isn't a distant galaxy we have to see in red shift. the red you see is the red you get. redshift isn't just distance its time as well and this is our own solar system not something light years away.
this story is on every major science site. its not just a normal occurrence. does it mean any of the theories we have proposed is to blame? no. but it also isn't something can be explained with the current scientific knowledge we have about the planet either. so there is plenty to see here whether it be new science about the dynamics of the planet or evidence to connect dots to something bigger.

Understood. But, I wasn't talking about redshift. Thats an enirely different matter.
By analyising the reflected (or produced) light of an object, you can determine what gasses makes up the atmosphere. Or in the case of a star, you look at the spectrum to determine the age of it, due to the reactions in it, certain elements produce different spectrums, the older the star the heavier the elements.
The other thing though, is the sun has been weird. Less active, but warmer. MAny 'global warming' sceptics kept stating that there is documented evidence of other planets in the solar system, warming at the same rate as earth. Perhaps we are seeing proof of this, in the warming of pluto as well? Dunno. But, I don't think its as strange as people make it out to be.

I have one thing on pluto saved on my hard drive, this.... not all that helpful eh how in the hell did i miss this reply? that is funny shit dboy. ;D but as i said not very helpful though... i didnt realise that theyve come up with these theories just by comparing photos of pluto between 1994 - 2002/3

nothing by itself seems strange. but when you factor in the almost steady stream of unseen before behaviors of almost every planet in the system along with other oddities its not a far stretch to wonder if something is going on.
the heavens have been observed for a long time. even before the modern day telescope. when things are not as you expect them to be something is happening. we have no clue what cycles our solar system goes through on a scale of millions of years or even hundreds of millions. what may seem extraordinary and hard to comprehend is just the norm for us the solar system and our galaxy. i'm not a doomsday kinda guy but we just don't know what wicked this way comes.

dboy the recent color shift they believe happened in just the span of two years.
something that has not previously been seen before.
