I believe there is some kind of dimensional doorway in the Bermuda triangle. It is not open all the time, but occasionally, due to climactic or solar conditions it opens and ships and planes are able to sail and fly through and disappear.
The story of flight 19 is a classic example.
5 planes and their crews simply vanish, no traces were ever found. The pilots lost all navigation, and despite being trained to deal with situation and the fact that all they had to do to reach the mainland was head west, they became hopelessly lost and disappeared.
A large navy search plane also disappeared in the effort to recover them.
The Flight leader was heard on radio to say while they were flying that "even the sea doesn't look right".
There is another story I have heard about a Cessna plane which radioed air traffic control to say he was lost and was flying over a chain of deserted island that he didn't recognize. However a local resident had already complained that a low flying Cessna had been circling his neighborhood for two hours.
The pilot was over a heavily populated area and could not see it.
There are also stories of pilots flying through strange "tunnel" clouds where the nature of time changes. Luckily they flew through the clouds without mishap.
I believe he flew through a doorway that disrupts your senses.
You are still physically in this dimension while the doorway is open, but when it closes behind you you are gone forever.
Perhaps the crew of the Marie Celeste entered this doorway, became disoriented and abandoned a perfectly good ship, only to become trapped when the doorway closed.
