What's Going on in Antarctica?
In the early 2000s, the Wilksland Gravity Anomaly was discovered by scientists measuring the gravitational field around the Earth. Two satellites were launched in 2002 called the Grace Twin satellites. Both designed to monitor the overall gravity of the Earth. Used to determine how differences in the gravitational field affect how satellites are moved. During a flyby over Antarctica, one of the satellites located a gravitational anomaly where a gravity well was found without corresponding mass. Since mass has a direct relation with the gravitational force, a larger mass equals a higher gravitation pull based on the mass.
Further research by Ralph von Frese, a geophysicist for Ohio State University found a 320 Km wide ‘plug’ of mass found 1.6 km beneath the ice surface in Antarctica. Frese believes the mass is the result of an impact of a circular rock that is still lodged into the continent. The radar images revealed a much larger crater surrounding the mass itself. No explanation has been offered by scientists, but it’s mass is much larger than any other crater currently known on Earth.
