Ebola. Zika. These are the viruses that grab headlines, and our attention. But, The Atlantic reports, other diseases aren’t getting their share of the spotlight—like a virus that has killed farmed tilapia in record numbers since 2009 (unaffected tilapia pictured). In places as far apart as Israel and Ecuador, farmers found their ponds decimated by the mystery virus—with some losing up to 30% of their total stocks. And according to a new study published in mBio, the virus’s genome is so unfamiliar that scientists can’t even be sure of what other viruses it’s related to. As humans grow animals for food, we create the perfect conditions for the emergence of diseases that have never before made a splash: close quarters, stressful conditions, and a lot of genetic similarity. So these sorts of food-threatening diseases are only growing more likely, researchers say. link
